Toxicology
Exposure to toxic substances, both in the workplace and in daily life, can have a significant impact on health. Toxicological analysis in hair allows detection of heavy metals, drugs, medications, or other harmful substances, helping to assess possible situations of prolonged exposure.
What can hair analysis detect?
Hair is the most suitable sample for studying continued exposure over time. As it grows (approximately 1 cm per month), it incorporates small amounts of substances present in the bloodstream.
This allows analysis of toxic exposure over a period of up to 6 months, depending on the length of the sample.
The analysis is designed to detect habitual consumption or repeated exposure, not isolated instances.
When a person is continuously exposed to a substance, small amounts accumulate in the hair or body hair and can be detected in the laboratory.
However, in the case of isolated or single exposure, the amount that reaches the hair is usually very low and the body eliminates it before it can be fixed, so it normally does not leave a detectable trace.
What substances can be analyzed?
In our laboratory we analyze a wide variety of substances, including:
- Heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, etc.)
- Medicinal substances
- Commonly consumed drugs
If you wish to analyze a specific substance and are not sure if it is included, you may contact us and we will inform you without obligation.
The sample must be obtained from the nape area
In addition to hair, it is also possible to perform the analysis from body hair (chest, arms, legs, etc.).
Unlike hair, body hair does not grow continuously, but rather has growth and rest phases. This causes substances to accumulate for longer, offering a wider detection window.
For this reason, body hair analysis allows study of exposures of approximately 9 to 12 months, with the most common being a window close to 9 months.
