Genetic Fingerprinting

DNA analysis has become a fundamental tool for human identification, both in the scientific field and in legal and family applications.

Each person possesses a unique genetic profile, also known as a genetic fingerprint (except in the case of monozygotic twins, who share the same profile).

Thanks to DNA analysis, it is possible to unequivocally identify an individual through the study of specific genetic markers used in forensic genetics.

What is the purpose of genetic identification?

Genetic identification consists of obtaining a person’s DNA profile by analyzing specific genetic markers. This profile can then be used to confirm the identity of an individual by genetic comparison.

Thanks to this technology it is possible to identify a person even in situations where traditional recognition methods are not sufficient.

The analysis is performed from a sample of buccal mucosa obtained by means of a swab, a quick, simple and painless procedure.

Among its main applications are

  • Identification of participants in paternity, maternity or other parentage tests.
  • Forensic investigations and criminalistics.
  • Victim identification in mass disasters, such as air crashes, fires or natural disasters.
  • Search for biological relatives.
  • Missing persons investigation.
  • Identification of adopted persons who wish to know their biological origin.
  • Preservation of genetic profiles to facilitate future identification in special situations.

Frequently asked questions about

Genetic Fingerprinting

No. The markers analyzed are used only for genetic identification. These regions of DNA do not provide information about diseases, health or physical characteristics, so the profile obtained is only used to compare DNA between individuals and establish possible biological relationships.

A genetic profile allows the comparison of a person’s DNA with that of others to confirm or rule out a possible biological relationship between them. This type of analysis is often used in kinship investigations, searches for biological relatives, missing persons cases or investigations related to possible stolen babies.

Having a genetic profile facilitates that, if in the future another compatible profile appears in a database or in a comparative analysis, a genetic match can be detected and the corresponding biological link can be established. In addition, the profile obtained can be retained for future genetic comparisons when necessary.

In this type of research, one of the first steps is usually to obtain the genetic profile of the relatives searching for a possible child or biological relative, such as the mother, father, siblings or other direct relatives.

The analysis makes it possible to generate an individual genetic fingerprint, which can then be used to make comparisons with other genetic profiles available in registries for this type of research.

Once the genetic profile has been obtained in the laboratory, the person concerned can submit it to the competent bodies, such as the Ministry of Justice, which has registration and comparison systems to facilitate the identification of possible matches between profiles.

From our laboratory we can advise on the process of obtaining the genetic profile and provide guidance on the steps to be followed afterwards for possible inclusion in the corresponding official registers.
